Peadar Tóibín, leader of the Aontu party, has called on Independent Ireland to support his party’s candidate, conservative campaigner Maria Steen, in her bid for the presidency. Steen has garnered ten nominations after a party hustings held at Leinster House on Thursday, but she requires an additional ten votes from Oireachtas members or nominations from four councils to secure her candidacy.

Tóibín confirmed that eight individuals have committed to nominating Steen, including himself, party colleagues Paul Lawless and Senator Sarah O’Reilly, as well as Independent TDs Mattie McGrath and Carol Nolan, alongside Senators Joe Conway, Rónán Mullen, and Sharon Keogan. He noted that two additional members have expressed support but need to consult with their teams before making a commitment.

In an interview with RTÉ Radio 1, Tóibín expressed optimism about attracting further political support for Steen. He remarked that many politicians remain hesitant to engage, doubting the potential for her candidacy to gain traction. “The difference between us is that we will bloody try,” he stated. “We will make a damnable effort to see if we can pull every lever that is there to make something happen.”

Tóibín acknowledged the existing political landscape, suggesting that Independent Ireland has its own processes but encouraged their participation. He urged undecided TDs to exercise their constitutional power to nominate candidates, emphasizing the importance of their role in shaping the electoral race. “This is a really important one and they should exercise it. They shouldn’t squander it at this moment in time,” he said.

The Aontu leader is eager to introduce more diversity into the presidential race, which he perceives as “one dimensional.” He pointed out that both Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin and Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys share similar political perspectives, highlighting the need for options that better represent a broader range of views.

Maria Steen is associated with the Catholic advocacy group the Iona Institute, where she has actively participated in debates surrounding significant referendums. Her previous campaigns include advocating for a no vote in the 2015 marriage equality referendum and opposing the 2018 abortion referendum. Tóibín believes that Steen resonates with a significant portion of the electorate, stating, “I think she is a very articulate, intelligent candidate and would make a great impact on that election.”

As the political landscape evolves, Tóibín’s call for support reflects his ambition to position Aontu as a formidable presence in the presidential race. The upcoming weeks will be crucial as Steen seeks to secure the necessary nominations to officially enter the contest.
