Israeli Air Strikes on Gaza City Claim 40 Lives Amid Crisis

Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of at least 40 Palestinians on September 13, 2023, according to local health authorities. Most of the casualties occurred in Gaza City, where residents are resisting evacuation orders issued by Israel, citing a lack of safe alternatives. The escalation of attacks is part of Israel’s strategy to regain control over Gaza City, a densely populated area housing approximately one million people, as it aims to eliminate the militant group Hamas.
Many residents, like Adel, a father of two living near the Beach refugee camp, have chosen to remain in their homes despite the increasing violence. Speaking to reporters, he expressed fear and frustration: “The explosions never stopped since yesterday. By these bombardments they are telling people ‘You either leave your area or die there.’” His words reflect the grim reality faced by countless families in Gaza as they navigate the ongoing conflict.
The Israeli army has intensified its military operations, completing five waves of airstrikes on Gaza City this week. They reported targeting over 500 sites, including buildings associated with Hamas’s military infrastructure, such as reconnaissance and sniper positions, as well as weapons depots. In addition to strikes in Gaza City, local authorities indicated that several lethal attacks occurred in the southern region of the territory, where many fleeing residents have sought refuge.
According to Amjad Al-Shawa, head of the Palestinian NGOs Network, an estimated 10 percent of Gaza City’s population has evacuated since Israel announced its plan for full control a month ago. The UN and various international governments have condemned the evacuation order, calling for a ceasefire and highlighting the dire humanitarian conditions in the region.
In a related incident, Israeli police reported the arrest of an assailant from a Palestinian area of the West Bank, who carried out a stabbing attack at a hotel in a kibbutz near Jerusalem. Two individuals were hospitalized as a result of the attack, illustrating the broader tensions in the region.
The ongoing military assault has had devastating consequences, with local health authorities stating that more than 64,000 people have died since the conflict escalated, the majority of whom were civilians. The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, leading to widespread hunger and suffering. Reports indicate that at least 411 individuals, including 142 children, have succumbed to malnutrition and starvation in the Gaza Strip.
This conflict was triggered by a series of attacks led by Hamas from Gaza into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 251 individuals, according to Israeli sources. As the situation evolves, the impacts on civilian life and the humanitarian toll remain critical concerns for international observers.
