Garda Arrests Two in Money Laundering Investigation in Dublin

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a money laundering investigation led by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB). The arrests follow the discovery of substantial amounts of cash and numerous bank cards linked to accounts in Poland and Norway.
Details of the Investigation
The investigation began after GNECB received information regarding significant cash withdrawals made from ATMs in Dublin and Cork between August 11 and September 9. The withdrawals were notably linked to bank cards associated with foreign accounts.
On September 13, a targeted operation was executed in the Lucan area of Dublin, where Gardaí located and searched a vehicle. This search yielded a considerable amount of cash and multiple bank cards.
A man in his early 30s was arrested during this operation under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006. He is currently detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. Following this, a woman in her mid-30s was also apprehended at a residence in Dublin, facing the same charges.
Further Developments and International Cooperation
In addition to the arrests, a subsequent search took place at a residence in Cork, where Gardaí recovered further cash, foreign currency, false identification documents, bank cards, and mobile phones. So far, the investigation has led to the seizure of over €90,000 in cash.
The Gardaí are currently collaborating with international law enforcement agencies through Europol to investigate the linked bank accounts in Poland and Norway. Both arrested individuals remain in custody as the inquiry continues.
The ongoing investigation highlights the efforts of the GNECB to combat financial crime and ensure that illicit activities are effectively addressed.
