Declan Bonner Returns to Management as Fermanagh Names New Boss

BREAKING NEWS: Declan Bonner is back in inter-county management as Fermanagh has officially appointed the former Donegal boss. This urgent announcement comes just weeks after Kieran Donnelly stepped down following a challenging four-year reign.
Bonner, a celebrated figure in Gaelic football and a 1992 All-Ireland winner, takes the helm of a Fermanagh team that narrowly missed promotion back to NFL Division 2. His recent success includes leading Erne Gaels to their first Fermanagh SFC title in 43 years, solidifying his reputation as a key player in the sport.
The 2025 season saw Fermanagh face tough competition, as they fell short against Down, costing them a spot in the Ulster semi-final. They were subsequently eliminated in the Tailteann Cup semi-finals by the eventual champions, Kildare. With Bonner’s appointment, all 12 senior inter-county football managerial vacancies post-2025 season have now been filled, marking a significant shift in the landscape of Gaelic football.
In a related update, ex-Fermanagh goalkeeper Ronan Gallagher has been named the new Under-20 boss, succeeding Maurice McLaughlin. Additionally, Dáithí Hand and Peter Galvin will serve as the new joint-managers of the Fermanagh senior hurlers, highlighting a new era for the county’s sports teams.
Meanwhile, in Westmeath, new boss Mark McHugh aims to elevate his team to challenge for Leinster SFC glory. His appointment follows the departure of Dermot McCabe, and he has been granted a two-year term, with an option for a third. McHugh, a former Donegal star, previously served as a coach under McCabe and is determined to revitalize the team.
Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall emphasized the aspirations for the county, stating, “He’s very strong on the Leinster Championship and would wonder how Louth can win one and not us.” The commitment to rebuilding the team is evident, with new players being introduced this year, aiming for both league promotion and provincial success.
As these developments unfold, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see how Bonner’s leadership at Fermanagh will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as both teams prepare for a competitive year ahead.
