Tributes Emerge for Meath GAA Legend Jimmy Fay After Passing

The sporting community is mourning the loss of former Meath footballer Jimmy Fay, who passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2023. Fay, a celebrated goalkeeper, was instrumental in Meath’s success during the 1980s and is remembered for his significant contributions to the game.

Celebrated Career in GAA

Born in Trim, Fay began his GAA career as a forward for Trim, playing alongside his brother Mickey Fay. The duo celebrated their first major achievement in 1968, when they helped the club secure its first minor county championship title. His talent quickly propelled him through the ranks, earning him a spot on the Meath minor team and later the senior squad in 1970.

Fay made a mark in the Leinster final that year, where he was brought on as a substitute and scored two crucial goals, aiding Meath’s advancement to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship finals. Known for his determination and skill, he earned the title of Meath Footballer of the Year in 1980 and played a vital role as goalkeeper when the county won the Centenary Cup in 1984.

A Legacy of Kindness and Camaraderie

Fay’s passing has spurred an outpouring of tributes from fans and former teammates alike. Many have shared their condolences, highlighting his vibrant personality and talent across various sports. He is predeceased by his baby son Ryan, parents Paddy and Peggy, and brother Pat. Fay is survived by his wife, Angela Fay, and his children Darren, Aaron, Jamie, and Kylie, along with several grandchildren.

Fay’s funeral arrangements have been announced, with his remains set to repose at McEvoy’s Funeral Home on October 13, 2023, from 16:00 to 19:00. A funeral mass will follow on the morning of October 14 at St. Patrick’s Church in Trim at 11:00.
