Schneider Electric Launches £42 Million Plant in North Yorkshire

BREAKING: Schneider Electric has officially commenced operations at its new £42 million state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The plant aims to meet the UK’s surging electricity demands, projected to increase by 40% by 2035.
The facility, designed for long-term growth, will produce essential electrical equipment as the UK transitions to cleaner energy. With full site commissioning targeted by year-end, this development is crucial for bolstering the nation’s energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on global supply chains.
Schneider Electric’s long-standing roots in Scarborough date back to the 1930s, allowing the company to harness local expertise and manufacturing knowledge. The new plant will enable faster, more flexible delivery of bespoke engineering solutions tailored to the UK market. Customers can collaborate directly with product designers and engineers on-site, ensuring that products meet their specific needs before production.
In a significant boost to the local EV charging network, the facility will host an additional 30 EV chargers, enhancing local infrastructure by more than 110% and accelerating the shift to electric fleets.
The new smart plant is not just about production; it is also a pioneering model for sustainable manufacturing. The facility is set to achieve net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and 2, utilizing an advanced solar energy system that will supply 30% of its energy needs.
Kelly Becker, President at Schneider Electric for the UK and Ireland, stated,
“UK manufacturing is the backbone of the nation’s infrastructure drive. Our Scarborough site gives us the scale and agility to respond quickly to market changes and support the UK’s energy transition.”
Rt Hon Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, welcomed the project, emphasizing its role in creating skilled jobs and driving growth in North Yorkshire. “This is fantastic news for people in Scarborough,” he noted, highlighting the facility’s potential to generate opportunities and support the upcoming Clean Energy Workforce Strategy.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, expressed excitement about the investment, stating,
“This new state-of-the-art facility will produce the electrical equipment we need, putting our region at the heart of the UK’s transition to cleaner energy.”
Lord Harrington, Chair of Make UK, described Schneider Electric’s investment as a powerful endorsement of UK manufacturing. He noted the facility’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, stating,
“With features such as rooftop solar panels and cutting-edge digital technologies, the factory sets a new benchmark for smart, low-carbon manufacturing in the UK.”
As the energy landscape in the UK evolves, Schneider Electric’s new plant stands as a cornerstone for the future, promising to deliver significant environmental benefits and economic opportunities. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
