Department of Justice Confirms No Animal Neglect at Derry Prison

UPDATE: The Department of Justice in Northern Ireland has swiftly dismissed allegations of animal neglect at Magilligan Prison in County Derry. These claims, which suggested inadequate care and housing for the prison’s on-site support dog, were found to be baseless following an urgent welfare check.
Just hours ago, officials confirmed that officers from Mid & East Antrim Borough Council evaluated the health of the prison’s support dog, Bailey, and found him to be in excellent health. The Department expressed disappointment that these unverified claims were circulated without proper fact-checking, emphasizing their commitment to the welfare of animals in their care.
In a statement released earlier today, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice asserted, “The Prison Service takes its duty of care for animals’ safety and well-being very seriously.” This response comes amidst growing public concern about animal welfare within correctional facilities.
The allegations raised questions about the transparency and treatment of animals used in rehabilitation programs. However, the swift action by authorities aims to reassure the public that standards are being upheld at Magilligan Prison.
As this story develops, the community will be watching closely for further updates on animal welfare practices in correctional institutions. The Department of Justice has reiterated its readiness to engage with stakeholders to ensure ongoing transparency and accountability.
Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue to address public concerns regarding animal care in the prison system.
