Fuel Allowance Payments Launch for 410,000 Irish Households

The first payments for this winter’s Fuel Allowance Scheme are set to commence this week, benefiting approximately 410,000 households across Ireland. This means-tested payment will be distributed over a period of 28 weeks, with recipients receiving either a weekly rate of €33 or two instalments of €462 each.
Expanded Eligibility Criteria
The scheme has recently undergone significant changes aimed at increasing accessibility for more households. As of January 2025, the eligibility criteria for those over 70 have been extended to include individuals aged 66 and above. Notably, this adjustment allows applicants in this age group to apply for the Fuel Allowance without needing to be in receipt of a social protection payment.
For single applicants aged 66 or over, the maximum allowable means has been set at €524 per week, while couples can have means up to €1,048 per week. Furthermore, the limit on disregarded capital has increased from €20,000 to €50,000. These changes aim to alleviate heating costs for a broader range of families during the winter months.
Another notable addition is the inclusion of the Carer’s Allowance as a qualifying payment for the Fuel Allowance, provided all criteria, including the means test, are satisfied. This expansion is designed to support those who provide care while also managing their own heating expenses.
Government Support for Households
Dara Calleary, Minister for Social Protection, emphasized the importance of the Fuel Allowance in supporting families throughout the winter. He stated, “I am delighted to announce that Fuel Allowance payments will commence this week to 410,000 households across the state. The Fuel Allowance plays a vital role in supporting hundreds of thousands of families with their heating costs over the winter months.”
Calleary encouraged individuals to verify their eligibility, noting the critical role this payment plays in helping households manage their heating expenses. With the eligibility conditions expanded this year, he urged those who may qualify to take the necessary steps to apply for this valuable support.
The implementation of these payments is expected to significantly impact many families, providing essential financial assistance during the colder months. As the winter approaches, the Fuel Allowance Scheme aims to ensure that households can keep warm without the added stress of financial burden.
