Design Team to Oversee 200-Bed Expansion Project at UHG

Plans are underway for a significant expansion at University Hospital Galway (UHG), with the appointment of a design team expected before the end of the year. This initiative aims to add an additional 200 beds to the facility, which is part of a broader Master Plan for the hospital.
The expansion will involve the construction of two new blocks, each housing over 150 beds. While this project will increase overall capacity, a portion of the existing beds will be temporarily removed during the construction process. This strategic move is intended to enhance patient care and address the ongoing demand for hospital services in the region.
John Connolly, a local representative from Fianna Fáil, emphasized the urgency of this project, expressing hope that the plans for the additional beds will progress swiftly. The proposed expansion aligns with other critical developments included in the hospital’s Master Plan, which also encompasses a new Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, a Maternity Unit, a Paediatric Unit, and a Cancer Centre.
As the region grapples with increasing healthcare demands, these enhancements at UHG will play a vital role in ensuring that patients receive timely and effective medical attention. The addition of these beds is not only a response to current needs but also a proactive measure to prepare for future healthcare challenges.
The initiative is expected to contribute positively to the hospital’s capacity and operational efficiency, ultimately benefiting the local community and surrounding areas. With the design team set to be appointed shortly, stakeholders will closely monitor the progress of this crucial development.
