University of Galway Drives Innovative Medical Research Projects

The University of Galway has secured funding for three pioneering research projects aimed at enhancing medical treatments. Supported by the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions-Doctoral Network programme under Horizon Europe 2020, these initiatives focus on improving healthcare outcomes through innovative and ethical approaches.

The funding, amounting to several million euros, will facilitate advancements in medical technology while ensuring a commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. The projects not only aim to create safer and more effective medical solutions but also emphasize the importance of training the next generation of researchers.

Focus Areas of the Research Initiatives

One of the standout projects, led by Dr Mihai Lomora, is the €4.2 million CerebroMachinesTrain Doctoral Network. This initiative aims to develop smarter drug delivery systems for brain diseases using advanced 3D brain models. By mimicking real brain tissue, researchers will test tiny machines designed to deliver medication accurately, significantly reducing reliance on animal testing.

Another key project is the €2.71 million MEDALLOY research initiative, directed by Dr William Ronan. This project targets the enhancement of materials used in life-saving devices, such as stents and heart valve supports, with a focus on durability and safety. The aim is to create materials that are not only stronger but also more reliable for patients undergoing minimally invasive procedures.

Additionally, Dr Eimear Morrissey leads the €4.4 million EDICT project, dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in clinical trials. This research and training network, in collaboration with the Health Research Board-Trials Methodology Research Network, seeks to ensure that clinical trials are inclusive of older adults, ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and those from lower-income backgrounds. The initiative will develop new tools and policies to enhance the fairness and effectiveness of clinical trials across Europe.

Professor Fidelma Dunne, Director of the Institute for Clinical Trials at the university, emphasized the transformative potential of research in improving lives. In addition to the medical-focused projects, the university has launched a fourth initiative, DECADOCS, which explores the societal phenomenon of decadence in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London. This marks the first doctoral network dedicated to studying this complex theme.
