University of Galway Launches Three Innovative Health Research Projects

The University of Galway has secured funding for three pioneering research projects aimed at enhancing medical treatments, making them safer, faster, and more effective. This initiative is backed by the European Commission’s prestigious Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions-Doctoral Network programme (MSCA DN), a part of Horizon Europe 2020.
The funding will support the development of innovative healthcare solutions while also providing training for researchers to become future leaders in their fields. This investment reflects a commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and affordability, ultimately benefiting patients across diverse communities.
Key Research Areas Targeting Health Improvements
One of the standout projects focuses on a shift towards sustainable practices in medical research. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on animal testing in studies related to brain diseases. A second project addresses cardiovascular health by improving the durability and longevity of heart stents. The third project emphasizes advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in clinical trials, ensuring that marginalized groups are represented in medical research.
Professor Fidelma Dunne, Director of the Institute for Clinical Trials at University of Galway, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of these projects, stating, “These projects show how research can make a real difference in people’s lives. University of Galway is proud to be leading the way in creating smarter, safer, and more sustainable healthcare solutions.”
Professor Ted Vaughan, Interim Director of the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, highlighted the dual mission of the projects: to accelerate understanding of diseases and to develop disruptive solutions for health challenges. He noted, “By combining cutting-edge science with collaborative training, we are not only advancing medical technologies but also shaping the next generation of research leaders.”
Details of the Funded Projects
The projects funded by the MSCA DN include:
– **CerebroMachinesTrain**: Led by Dr Mihai Lomora with a budget of €4.2 million, this project aims to create smarter drug delivery systems for brain diseases. Utilizing advanced 3D brain models that replicate real brain tissue, the research will test miniature machines designed to deliver medicine precisely where needed, thereby avoiding animal testing.
– **MEDALLOY**: Dr William Ronan heads this €2.71 million project, which focuses on developing stronger and more durable materials for life-saving medical devices, such as stents and heart valve supports. This advancement is crucial for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of these devices in patient care.
– **EDICT**: Dr Eimear Morrissey leads this €4.4 million initiative aimed at enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in clinical trials. Funded by the Health Research Board-Trials Methodology Research Network, this project seeks to involve older adults, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and those from lower-income backgrounds in clinical research. It aims to develop new tools and policies to ensure fair and effective clinical trials across Europe.
Additionally, a fourth project, **DECADOCS**, led by Dr Muireann O’Cinneide, partners with Goldsmiths, University of London, and the Cúirt International Festival of Literature. This initiative focuses on the study of societal decadence and its implications, marking a unique expansion of research themes within the University.
This funding not only positions the University of Galway at the forefront of medical research but also strengthens its role in fostering innovative healthcare solutions with a focus on inclusivity and sustainability.
