Sod Turned on Derg Active Projects: New Phase Begins Today

UPDATE: The sod has officially been turned today, marking a significant milestone in the Derg Active projects. This development signals the start of phase two of the initiative, aimed at enhancing community health and wellness. The event took place on September 23, 2025, with Mayor Cllr Ruraí McHugh leading the ceremony.
The project, funded by the British Government along with the Derry City and Strabane District Council, encompasses improvements at several key locations, including Mitchell Park, the Diamond, Derg Valley Leisure Centre, and Castle Park. These upgrades are poised to promote a healthier lifestyle for local residents, making recreational activities more accessible and enjoyable.
Mayor McHugh expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to see progress made on these eagerly awaited projects.” The mayor’s commitment reflects the community’s anticipation for enhanced facilities that will cater to an active lifestyle.
The Derg Active projects are crucial, as they not only improve infrastructure but also aim to foster a sense of community and encourage physical activity among all age groups. With the support of local government and funding sources, this phase is expected to make a lasting impact on the region.
As construction begins, residents are encouraged to stay informed about further developments. The next steps will involve detailed planning and timelines for the completion of each facility. Community members are invited to participate in upcoming meetings to discuss the project and its benefits.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance public spaces and promote health across the district. As work progresses, updates will be provided to ensure transparency and community involvement.
Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project that aims to enrich the lives of residents in the Derry area.
