Urgent: Service Station Plans Refused Off N83 at Knockdoe

UPDATE: Plans for a major service station development off the N83 at Knockdoe have been officially refused permission by county planners, just announced earlier today. The proposal, spearheaded by Castlegar Developments Ltd, aimed to create a multi-million euro facility that would have included a retail shop, food court, drive-thru, and outdoor seating.
The site was proposed for the left side of the N83, heading towards Tuam, with an entrance positioned just before the Knockdoe Junction, near the old Newell’s filling station. Key features included parking for 80 cars and a new pedestrian and cycle route to connect to the local bus stop, enhancing community access.
However, Transport Infrastructure Ireland raised significant concerns regarding the project. Their submission indicated that the plans contradicted national policy on road development, emphasizing risks associated with traffic and safety. Following these warnings, planners have ruled against the development on multiple grounds, including the scale and design being inconsistent with the local character.
The refusal represents a setback for Castlegar Developments Ltd, which can appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála. However, analysts suggest that a redesign of the proposal may be more feasible than undergoing a lengthy appeals process.
This decision impacts not only the developers but also the local community that was looking forward to improved services and amenities. As regional planners prioritize safety and community integrity, the future of this location remains uncertain.
Stay tuned for updates on potential redesigns or appeals, as local stakeholders evaluate their next steps in this unfolding situation.
