UPDATE: A remarkable new exhibition showcasing portraits of guide dogs is now open at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, Donegal. This urgent initiative, launched by local artist Molly Gallagher, aims to raise awareness and funds for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Molly Gallagher, a recent graduate from ATU, has dedicated her talents to creating stunning clay portraits that honor the unique beauty of these life-changing animals. Earlier this year, she collaborated with the Donegal branch of the charity to produce a series of eight detailed artworks that spotlight the heroic dogs working throughout the county.

The exhibition, which initially opened at Bloem Cafe in June, is currently on display at the RCC and is set to remain until October 25. This is a vital opportunity for the community to engage with and support the cause, as a portion of sales from each piece goes directly to the charity.

“I am so happy I got to do this,” Molly shared. “I loved getting sent the photos of the dogs and hearing their stories.” This heartfelt collaboration not only showcases the artistry but also emphasizes the significant role these dogs play in enhancing the lives of individuals with vision impairments and autism.

Each piece in the Clay M8 exhibition not only captures the likeness of these amazing animals but also reflects their distinct personalities. The artworks include portraits of guide, assistance, ambassador, and brood dogs, along with narratives detailing their impact on people’s lives in Donegal.

Molly had the opportunity to meet some of her canine models this summer, stating, “It was so nice to finally meet some of them. Seeing the dogs, their owners, and their families in person and hearing about the difference they make was incredibly rewarding.”

Annie Gallagher, Volunteer Support Officer for the Irish Guide Dogs, praised Molly’s work, noting, “The artworks she created are truly stunning. Her ability to capture the essence of each dog is remarkable.” The collaboration is not only about art; it is a passionate effort to spread awareness about the vital services provided by the charity.

Molly’s journey as an artist began with the launch of Clay M8 in November of last year. She has found great joy in creating keepsakes, even when faced with the bittersweet task of honoring pets that have passed away. “You think of the family that is missing them,” she reflected, emphasizing the emotional impact of her work.

The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind exhibition is free to visit at the Foyer Gallery in the Regional Cultural Centre, with opening hours from 11 AM to 5 PM Tuesday to Friday and 1 PM to 5 PM on Saturdays. As the exhibition draws closer to its end date, the urgency to visit and support this cause grows.

For those interested in keeping the spirit of their pets alive through Molly’s art, she is accepting orders for clay portraits and gifts via email at [email protected] or through her social media pages on Instagram and Facebook.

This exhibition is not just a display of art; it is a heartfelt tribute that underscores the incredible bond between humans and their guide dogs. Don’t miss this chance to witness the magic and support a noble cause.
