URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking study from global talent solutions partner Robert Walters reveals that over 35% of Gen Z professionals are turning to AI tools for work-related inquiries before consulting their managers or colleagues. This trend is reshaping workplace communication dynamics in Ireland, as 42% of professionals across all age groups report asking their line managers fewer questions due to the rise of AI.

The findings indicate a significant shift in how employees are engaging with technology to enhance productivity. “AI tools are transforming workplace communications by enhancing productivity and reducing the time professionals spend waiting for crucial answers,” said Suzanne Feeney, country manager at Robert Walters Ireland. However, this shift is not without its challenges.

While AI offers efficiency, it also complicates decision-making processes, keeping managers out of the loop. Some managers are increasingly feeling the pressure, with 73% of Irish managers stating they have not received any guidance or training on managing teams in an AI-driven environment. Of those who have received training, over half reported that it was insufficient.

Feeney warns that “ignoring this problem now could erode manager-employee relationships, disrupting the flow of knowledge between younger and more senior professionals.” Such disruptions could lead to significant experience and skills gaps in the future workforce.

As employers in Ireland grapple with the need to ‘do more with less,’ a staggering 29% of young managers cite overwork and burnout as their biggest challenges. This follows previous research from Robert Walters in 2024, which found that 69% of Gen Z professionals wish to avoid management roles, perceiving them as “high stress, low reward.”

Employers must act now. Feeney emphasizes, “Managers must focus on equipping themselves to work alongside AI. Leveraging AI for simple queries while retaining oversight of strategic requests is crucial.” Those who actively engage in AI implementation will likely experience greater success.

As the workplace continues to evolve, the relationship between technology and management will be critical. Organizations need to establish clear protocols for AI use to ensure that it enhances rather than hinders productivity.
