URGENT UPDATE: The University of Galway has just been awarded the prestigious title of ESCI Champion by the European Commission for the years 2025-2027. This recognition highlights the university’s pivotal role in advancing digital innovation in student services, significantly impacting student mobility across Europe.
This recognition was announced by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, designating the University of Galway as Ireland’s leading institution for the European Student Card Initiative (ESCI). The ESCI Champion award underscores the university’s commitment to simplifying and securing the recognition of academic credentials, thereby promoting greater student mobility and inclusion.
The award specifically acknowledges the University of Galway’s successful implementation of the “Erasmus Without Paper” initiative, aimed at making higher education more efficient and interconnected. This initiative is crucial for students participating in mobility programs like Erasmus+, streamlining administrative processes and enhancing the overall student experience.
Professor David J. Burn, President of the University of Galway, expressed pride in this achievement, stating,
“We are honoured to be named Ireland’s ESCI Champion for 2025-2027. This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff and students in embracing digital innovation and European cooperation.”
The university’s role as an ESCI Champion will be officially launched at a kick-off meeting scheduled for this September in Gothenburg, Sweden. Over the next two years, the university’s Global Galway team will actively engage in national and European events, sharing their expertise and best practices with other institutions.
Sheena Duffy, Head of International at the Higher Education Authority Ireland, praised the university’s selection, stating,
“University of Galway’s selection as ESCI Champion is a testament to their leadership in digital transformation and student mobility.”
She emphasized that their efforts will be instrumental in advancing the European Student Card Initiative and inspiring other higher education institutions throughout Ireland and beyond.
