Urgent Action Demanded as Kilkenny Faces Water Quality Crisis

UPDATE: Kilkenny is facing a water quality crisis that has raised alarm among local officials and residents. Sean Ó hArgain of the Labour Party has urgently called on Kilkenny County Council to investigate serious issues affecting the River Nore, which have disrupted summer activities, including swimming, for locals and tourists alike.
Earlier this summer, the highly anticipated Nore Swim & Marble City Mile event was postponed due to unsafe water conditions. The situation escalated as the council announced a temporary bathing prohibition at popular spots including The Weir, Bleach Road, and Bishops Meadows, impacting residents in Thomastown, Inistioge, and Graignamanagh. This has resulted in widespread frustration among those who rely on these facilities, especially during the hot weather.
Cllr Ó hArgain expressed his deep concerns during a municipal meeting, stating, “We need to ensure this is the last summer that we have bathing restrictions in place in the city centre because it’s too important for it to happen again.” He emphasized the necessity for comprehensive investigations into the underlying causes of the water quality issues and accountability for those responsible.
Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Mayor Cllr Maria Dollard highlighted that this is not a new problem but a long-standing issue that must be addressed with urgency. “It’s appalling what is happening to our rivers,” she stated, stressing the ecological implications and the loss of biodiversity along the riverbanks.
The citizens of Kilkenny are demanding immediate action to restore safe swimming conditions and protect the natural habitat of the River Nore. The council faces mounting pressure to investigate and rectify the situation before next summer.
Officials are expected to release further details on their action plan soon, as community members await concrete steps to ensure the river’s health and accessibility. As the situation develops, the focus remains on finding solutions to prevent future disruptions and safeguard the vital recreational resources of Kilkenny.
