BREAKING: Major construction on the Waterford Road in Kilkenny City is officially set to begin in October 2025, as local authorities confirm the progression of the Waterford Road Pedestrian and Cyclist Improvement Scheme to the construction stage. This announcement follows the successful completion of detailed design and planning processes, marking a significant step in enhancing urban mobility.

The improvement scheme is part of the broader Active Travel Programme aimed at boosting connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists throughout Kilkenny. Officials expect the project to deliver substantial community benefits, including calmer traffic in residential areas and enhanced safety for all road users—pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transport passengers alike.

Feedback from public consultations played a crucial role in shaping the design, ensuring that community needs are prioritized. The scheme will feature upgraded footpaths and dedicated cycle lanes spanning from the Waterford Road Roundabout to the roundabout at the intersection of Waterford Road and Bohernatounish Road. Additionally, it includes a new school bus bay serving Kilkenny School Project and two new pedestrian crossings to improve access for residents of Springfields and Hollybank.

Last year, significant upgrades were completed along the Freshford Road and Granges Road corridor, prioritizing critical school routes. With construction on the Waterford Road commencing soon, authorities are focused on elevating safety and accessibility for students and families in the area.

Going forward, plans for phase two will introduce further enhancements, including upgraded footpaths and cycle facilities extending from the Bohernatounish Road roundabout to the Nuncio Road Roundabout. This phase will also ensure safer roundabout crossings and additional facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, continuing the commitment to improving transportation safety for schools, including Presentation Secondary School.

With funding secured under the National Transport Authority’s Active Travel Programme, Kilkenny City is on track to achieve a more connected and safer environment for all road users. The local authority urges residents to stay informed as details unfold.
