Barack Obama Receives Freedom of Dublin City in Ceremony

Former President Barack Obama has officially been conferred with the Freedom of Dublin City, an honour he received in a ceremony on March 15, 2024. This distinction, awarded by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ray McAdam, recognizes significant contributions to the city and its community. Obama is currently in Dublin for a performance scheduled at the 3Arena tomorrow night.

The Freedom of Dublin City is a prestigious title that has been bestowed upon only 88 individuals since its inception in 1876. Previous recipients include notable figures such as former U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton, as well as influential international leaders like Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev. Irish sporting icons, including Jack Charlton, Ronnie Delany, and Kellie Harrington, have also been honoured with this award.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Obama expressed gratitude and humility for the recognition. “To Lord Mayor McAdam, former Lord Mayor Carr, the Dublin City Council, and the citizens of Dublin: on behalf of Michelle and myself, I accept this honour with deep humility,” he stated. Obama emphasized the enduring bond between the Irish and American people, particularly in challenging times. “May we continue to strengthen those ties, and keep working to make our world a little more just, more equal, more prosperous, and more free,” he added.

Lord Mayor McAdam highlighted the significance of Obama’s achievements both as President and as a global leader.
