Orla Ní Fhinneadha Appointed Sean-Nós Singer-in-Residence at University of Galway

BREAKING NEWS: Renowned sean-nós singer Orla Ní Fhinneadha has been officially appointed as the 2025-2026 Sean-Nós Singer-in-Residence at the University of Galway’s Centre for Irish Studies. This exciting announcement was made today, and it marks a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to promoting traditional Irish music.
Orla, who hails from An Chloich Mhór, Baile na hAbhann, Co Galway, is the current holder of the esteemed Corn na mBán title, showcasing her exceptional talent. Having started her journey in music at a young age, Orla has been deeply influenced by her primary school teacher, Mairé Pheitir Uí Dhroighneáin, and her father, Jimi Ó Fhinneadha. Her accolades include prestigious awards, such as coming in third place at the Corn Uí Riada during the Oireachtas in 2016 and several titles at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
The impact of Orla’s work extends beyond just performance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she created a series of educational videos for Cúla 4 ar Scoil, where she presented and taught sean-nós songs. These videos have left a lasting legacy, as children continue to learn from them today.
In a statement regarding this appointment, Dr Nessa Cronin, Head of Irish Studies at the University of Galway, expressed her enthusiasm: “It is a privilege to have Orla Ní Fhinneadha with us at the University for the coming academic year. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise to inspire the next generation of sean-nós singers.”
Orla’s residency will kick off with a series of workshops on campus, starting on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 6 PM. These workshops are free and open to the public, providing an incredible opportunity for both students and the community to engage with traditional Irish music.
This initiative is made possible through funding from Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Údarás na Gaeltachta, and An Chomhairle Ealaíon, in collaboration with the Centre for Irish Studies at the University of Galway.
As Orla begins her year as Sean-Nós Singer-in-Residence, the university community and traditional music enthusiasts alike are eager to witness how her expertise will shape the future of sean-nós singing. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
