University of Galway Honours Professor Anderson for 19th Century Innovation

One of the University of Galway’s former presidents has been honoured for his significant contribution to electrical measurement, a groundbreaking achievement over 130 years ago. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the Alice Perry Engineering Building, recognising the invention of the Anderson Bridge, developed by Professor Alexander Anderson in 1891.

The honour was bestowed by the IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for humanity. This recognition highlights not only Anderson’s pioneering work but also its lasting impact on the field of engineering.

Professor Peter McHugh, the interim president of the University, remarked on the significance of Anderson’s contributions, stating that his work has influenced “generations of engineers worldwide.” Anderson was appointed as Professor of Natural Philosophy in 1885 and served as the university’s president from 1899 until 1934.

The laboratory where Anderson conducted much of his research is situated in the Quad and is now home to the Alexander Anderson Boardroom. The dedication of the plaque serves as a reminder of the university’s rich history in engineering innovation and its commitment to honouring those who have made significant strides in the field.
