Thousands Set to Qualify for Increased Carer’s Allowance Payments

The upcoming budget plans in Ireland are set to significantly expand the eligibility for the Carer’s Allowance, with thousands more expected to qualify for payments of up to €447 per week. This change is driven by an increase in the income disregard for the allowance, which will rise by €200 to €825 a month for single individuals, and by €400 to €1,650 a month for couples.

To receive the weekly payment, applicants must provide full-time care, defined as more than 35 hours of care each week, while also meeting the revised means test requirements. These proposals were discussed at a recent conference held by the Fine Gael party. While Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe did not confirm specific details, he emphasized that supporting carers is a “key focus” of the government.

In statements made during the conference, Donohoe highlighted the strength of the Irish economy, noting that 2.8 million people are currently employed, representing record high employment levels. He remarked, “Our labour market is strong, with tens of thousands of jobs added already this year, making a real difference to the lives of many.”

Potential Increases and Other Budget Considerations

In addition to the Carer’s Allowance adjustments, the government is also considering a €7 weekly increase in the fuel allowance, which would benefit approximately 410,000 households across the country. However, it appears that certain payments, such as the €250 energy credit and the €1,000 college fee reduction, are unlikely to be revised in the upcoming budget, which is scheduled for October 7.

Overall, these budgetary adjustments reflect an ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in Ireland, particularly those who provide essential care to others. The anticipated changes to the Carer’s Allowance are expected to provide crucial financial relief for many families as they navigate the challenges associated with caregiving.
