Urgent Approval for 172 Social Housing Units in Letterkenny and Killybegs

BREAKING: Donegal County Council has just approved significant social housing developments in both Letterkenny and Killybegs, paving the way for a much-needed increase in affordable housing. This urgent decision, made on September 30, 2025, includes plans for 172 housing units in Ballymacool and an additional 18 units on Fintra Road.
The approval comes amidst rising demand for social housing in the region. The Ballymacool project will comprise various residential units, with full site development works set to begin shortly. However, local representative Cllr Dennis McGee has voiced concerns about potential traffic congestion in the area, questioning whether the development can proceed as planned. “The cart is being put before the horse,” he stated, emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure.
In Killybegs, the approved development includes the demolition of an old shed to make way for two one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom apartments. This initiative also encompasses the construction of a new vehicular entrance onto Fintragh Road, ensuring access to existing services and amenities.
These developments are crucial for addressing the housing crisis affecting many communities. The approved plans will not only provide homes but also enhance local economies by creating jobs during construction.
As the situation evolves, officials are expected to release further details on timelines and construction schedules. Residents are keen to see how these projects will impact their neighborhoods and local infrastructure.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and share your thoughts on the impact of these new housing initiatives.
