A man has been charged with the murders of three family members at their home in Louth Village, Ireland. Robert O’Connor, aged 31, faces three counts of murder, including that of his father, Mark O’Connor (54), mother, Louise O’Connor (56), and brother, Evan O’Connor (27). The tragic events are reported to have occurred on September 29, 2023, with the bodies discovered at their residence shortly before 10:00 AM.

During a special sitting of Drogheda District Court on the evening of September 30, Judge Stephanie Coggans presided over the case. Garda Shane O’Malley provided evidence regarding the arrest of Robert O’Connor, which took place at 16:43 at Drogheda Garda Station. O’Malley stated that O’Connor was cautioned and charged with the murders, to which he made no reply.

The court heard that Robert O’Connor has a history of mental health issues, having been involved with mental health services since he was 22 years old. His solicitor, Paul James Moore, requested a psychiatric assessment, which Judge Coggans approved. Additionally, Moore applied for legal aid, which was granted for one counsel on all matters.

As per legal protocol, no bail was sought for O’Connor, as the District Court does not handle bail hearings for murder charges. Such hearings can only be conducted in the High Court. Consequently, Robert O’Connor was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear via video link in Drogheda District Court on October 6, 2023, at 10:30 AM.

During the brief court appearance, O’Connor was dressed in a grey top, black tracksuit bottoms, and black shoes. He did not address the court, while his brother, Cian O’Connor, attended the hearing alongside the family’s Garda liaison officer.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its tragic nature and the familial ties involved. As the legal proceedings continue, the community in Co Louth grapples with the impact of this devastating event.
