Storm Amy Hits Ireland: Floods, Winds Up to 130 mph Expected

UPDATE: Severe weather is hitting Ireland as Storm Amy approaches, bringing dangerous winds and heavy rainfall. Authorities are warning of potential flooding, power outages, and travel disruptions across the country.
The Southwest is already experiencing significant rainfall, with parts of Cork reporting over 100 mm of rain in Glengarriff. Meanwhile, the Maam Valley in County Galway saw more than 64 mm fall in just eight hours. This deluge is expected to worsen as the storm continues to move in.
Weather experts at Met Éireann have issued a Status Orange wind warning for five counties, including Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, as gusts could reach up to 130 mph. This warning takes effect at 2 PM today and remains in place until 10 PM.
Additionally, a Status Yellow wind warning will apply nationwide starting at 12 PM, valid until midnight. Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution, as conditions are expected to be hazardous with debris and loose objects being displaced.
In a statement, Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the unusual warmth accompanying the storm could exacerbate flooding issues. “The combination of heavy rain and strong winds poses a serious threat to life and property,” he warned.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to prepare for disruptions, including potential power cuts and fallen trees. Authorities are mobilizing resources to respond to emergency situations as they develop.
As Storm Amy approaches, stay tuned for further updates and safety information. Ensure you are prepared and monitor official channels for real-time alerts. Share this information to keep your community safe.
