Cook Medical Mini Marathon Celebrates Inclusivity on October 5

The Cook Medical Mini Marathon returns to Limerick on October 5, 2024, uniting thousands of participants in a celebration of community spirit and inclusivity. Whether running, jogging, or walking, everyone is invited to the starting line for this eagerly anticipated event in the Mid-West. This year’s theme emphasizes that there is a place for everyone, regardless of their pace or experience.

As participants prepare for the race, two women stand out as examples of resilience and determination. Ilayda Bozveli, from Dooradoyle, and Tina Buckley, from Granville Park, have both faced significant health challenges yet remain committed to crossing the finish line at the mini marathon.

Earlier this year, Ilayda endured a severe scooter accident that resulted in a badly broken ankle. The injury required extensive surgery and several months of rehabilitation. With family in Turkey unable to support her, Ilayda confronted this life-altering event alone in Ireland. “I had to become my own caregiver,” she stated. “From surgery, to moving house while still in a cast, it was one challenge after another. But I made a promise to my friend Dee that one day we would run a marathon together, and I was determined to keep it.”

Her recovery journey was arduous, necessitating the relearning of basic movements before she could even consider running. Almost a year post-accident, Ilayda is ready for her first marathon, expressing, “Running makes me feel alive. I’ve never felt this strong or this proud of myself.”

Similarly, Tina Buckley is also participating for the first time. In March 2024, she faced a life-threatening situation when an emergency surgery was required to treat a bowel blockage. The procedure involved the removal of her entire colon, resulting in the necessity of a stoma. “I was in very bad pain and very sick,” Tina recalled. “Now I have a bag attached to my stomach for life. But I’m hoping to run the Cook Mini Marathon this year.”

The participation of both Ilayda and Tina serves as a powerful reminder that the mini marathon transcends mere distance; it embodies the spirit of overcoming personal obstacles. As the event approaches, the Cook Medical Mini Marathon is poised to raise essential funds for local charities throughout the Mid-West.

Participants are encouraged to run, walk, or jog in support of causes that resonate with them. Each step taken during the race contributes to meaningful change in the community, reinforcing the event’s commitment to inclusivity and support.

The mini marathon kicks off at 12:00 PM on Sunday, with participants navigating either the 5 km or 10 km courses starting from the University of Limerick. The event promises to be a celebration of strength, community, and shared purpose, inviting everyone to take part in the journey towards health and well-being.
