BREAKING: The Kilkenny community is in mourning following the passing of local legend John Donovan, who died on August 30, 2023, at the age of 55. Known for his unwavering spirit and love for sports, John left an indelible mark on many lives across the region.

John, a beloved fixture in Kilkenny, was known for his radiant smile and his role as a traffic warden, engaging with residents on the streets of Kilkenny City. His passing has left a profound sense of loss, as friends and family remember him fondly. Quigley’s at MacDonagh Junction, the café he cherished, will forever hold a special place for the Donovan Coffee Heads, the group he founded.

In his eulogy, brother Jessie Donovan highlighted John’s remarkable resilience, noting how he overcame the challenges of living with Spina Bifida. Diagnosed shortly after birth, John defied expectations, taking his first steps at the age of seven. His story of triumph inspired many, showcasing his determination to live life fully.

John’s passion for sports, particularly hurling and soccer, was well-known. A dedicated supporter of the John Lockes GAA club, he celebrated many victories, including the club’s historic win in the 1993 intermediate championship. His excitement was palpable as he cheered for his friends and teammates, including Kevin ‘Butty’ Coffey and John Power, both of whom visited him during his recent hospital stays.

Community members expressed their sorrow and fond memories, emphasizing how John brought joy to everyone he met. Trish Leahy, a fellow Tipperary supporter, reminisced about their playful banter, while many others shared stories of his kindness and camaraderie. “He was a great man, always uplifting those around him,” said one friend.

In addition to sports, John was passionate about music, often encouraging his uncle Mick Ryan during performances. His family gatherings were filled with laughter and pride as he celebrated the achievements of his relatives, including his niece Robyn and nephew Ryan, who recently won county titles.

John’s life was also marked by his independence and community spirit, demonstrated during a heartwarming 50th birthday celebration in May 2020. Despite the pandemic restrictions, friends and family gathered to honor him, showcasing the love and respect he garnered throughout his life.

As Kilkenny residents gathered for a minute’s silence at Nowlan Park during a recent hurling match, the impact of John’s life was poignantly felt. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

In a final tribute, the Donovan family received condolences from across the community as they navigate this difficult time. “John will always have a seat at our table,” his friend remarked, reflecting the sentiment shared by many.

As we say goodbye to John Donovan, we remember his spirit and the joy he brought to our lives. He now walks free, reunited with his beloved parents, Kathleen and Paddy, in the great beyond.
