Urgent Update: Carer’s Support Grant Set for €100 Boost in 2026

URGENT UPDATE: A significant increase to the Carer’s Support Grant is confirmed as part of Budget 2026. Reports indicate that the annual payment will rise by €100, increasing from €2,000 to €2,100 beginning in June 2026.
This announcement comes as the Coalition moves towards abolishing means testing for the Carer’s Allowance. The new budget will also raise income thresholds by €200 for single individuals and €400 for couples. The income disregard in the means test will increase to €825 monthly for singles and €1,650 for couples, allowing more caregivers to benefit from this essential support.
The Carer’s Support Grant, previously known as the Respite Care Grant, is a vital financial aid provided by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). It is designed to assist those who provide care to individuals with disabilities or other needs. The grant can be utilized at the discretion of the caregiver, offering flexibility in how the funds are used.
Every June, specifically on the first Thursday of the month, the DSP automatically pays the grant to those already receiving specific allowances, including the Carer’s Allowance and Domiciliary Care Allowance. The last payment was made on June 5, 2025. Caregivers who do not currently receive these payments must complete a Carer’s Support Grant application form (CSG1) for each individual they care for.
With these changes on the horizon, the Carer’s Support Grant is set to provide greater financial relief to countless families across Ireland. The announcement highlights the government’s commitment to supporting caregivers, who play a critical role in the health and well-being of their loved ones.
As Budget 2026 approaches, caregivers are encouraged to stay informed about these updates and prepare for the new application process if necessary. This increase is not just a financial adjustment; it represents a recognition of the invaluable contributions made by caregivers in society.
