Average Musicians Unite for Monthly Jam Sessions in Letterkenny

A new musical initiative launched in Letterkenny is inviting local musicians to join a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere for jamming. The event, aptly named AMP, which stands for Average Musicians Playing, aims to create a welcoming space for individuals who enjoy playing music but may not consider themselves professional performers.
Scheduled for the first Monday of every month at 19:00, AMP is designed for those who may feel their skills are not up to gigging standards. The organizers emphasize that virtuosos need not apply, promoting a no-pressure environment where musical enjoyment is the priority. “Tired of rocking out alone in your bedroom? Think you’re too average for a band but too good to quit? AMP is for you,” they stated.
Event Details and Participation
The jam sessions will take place in a yet-to-be-announced venue in Letterkenny. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments along with a €10 fee to cover room hire costs. The event is open to individuals aged 21 and over, fostering a friendly and non-competitive atmosphere.
Attendees should possess the ability to play along to chord sheets or tabs, while complete beginners or professional musicians looking to showcase their skills are discouraged from attending. The event welcomes a variety of instruments, including electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, cajón, vocals, fiddle, harmonica, saxophone, and small percussion instruments that can integrate into a backline setup.
Musical Genres and Format
Music played during the sessions will focus on accessible and enjoyable tracks, incorporating genres such as rock, indie, pop, folk, country, blues, and traditional Irish music. Organizers describe the selections as “easy fun stuff with solid grooves,” featuring classics that typically require only three to five chords. Participants can expect to engage with crowd-pleasers, 90s hits, and Irish sing-alongs, avoiding complex arrangements or advanced improvisational styles.
The format of the evening will include a brief introduction, setting the volume, and selecting tunes from a shared list. Each session will feature one verse and chorus to familiarize players with the song, followed by a complete run. Short solos are welcome, provided they maintain a cohesive and enjoyable experience for all.
Aside from instruments, players are encouraged to bring essential accessories such as leads, tuners, stands, spare strings, or sticks. The AMP event aims to cultivate a community of music enthusiasts, allowing individuals to share their love for music in a supportive setting.
For those interested in participating, registration can be completed through an online form, and inquiries can be directed to [email protected]. This initiative promises to be an exciting opportunity for musicians in Letterkenny looking to connect and create music together.
