The Limerick Festival of Science has been awarded €50,000 as part of government funding to support initiatives during Science Week 2025. This year’s festival is set to run from November 7 to November 17, 2025, aiming to enhance public engagement with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The festival’s mission is to “unlock new possibilities by stimulating curiosity and fostering dialogue among the public and STEM experts.” It will feature various events addressing significant societal issues where STEM has a critical impact.
During the announcement, Minister for Further and Higher Education, James Lawless TD, revealed that a total of €847,820 has been allocated nationwide for this year’s Science Week, which marks its 30th anniversary. He emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Science Week is now a key event across Ireland, connecting people with science through engaging activities.”
Minister Lawless highlighted the theme for this year, “Then. Today. Tomorrow.”, which encourages participants to reflect on scientific advancements and future possibilities. He urged communities to engage with the numerous events scheduled throughout the country during Science Week, expressing his excitement about the department’s investment in 36 projects.
Dr. Ruth Freeman, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, commended the festival’s long-standing tradition of fostering curiosity and community through science. “For 30 years, Science Week has been sparking curiosity and bringing people together through science,” she noted.
Dr. Freeman also pointed out the significance of this anniversary theme, stating that it is an opportunity to celebrate past achievements while considering future advancements.
