Galway’s BusConnects Project Receives Urgent Planning Approval

BREAKING: Planning permission has just been granted for the highly anticipated BusConnects: Dublin Road project in Galway City by An Coimisiún Pleanála. This groundbreaking development will introduce a 3.9 km continuous corridor from Moneenageisha Junction to Doughiska Junction along the R338 Dublin Road, revolutionizing public transport in the region.
The project is set to transform Galway’s transport landscape by adding dedicated bus lanes in both directions and enhancing bus stops along this vital route. Additionally, the infrastructure will include new active travel amenities such as segregated cycle tracks and upgraded pedestrian facilities. This development is essential for improving public transport, walking, and cycling infrastructure in Galway, as emphasized by Cllr Mike Cubbard, Mayor of Galway City.
“This is a very welcome development for much-needed public transport,” Cllr Cubbard stated. He highlighted that BusConnects Galway: Dublin Road serves numerous significant employers, educational institutions, and residential areas along the route.
As part of the planning approval, An Coimisiún Pleanála has authorized Galway City Council to compulsorily purchase several properties along the corridor. This approval is a significant milestone in the Galway Transport Strategy, with funding provided by the National Transport Authority.
Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, remarked,
“BusConnects Galway is a priority project for Galway City, with Dublin Road a significant route in the city’s growing network of public transport infrastructure.”
Cleary emphasized that Dublin Road will connect with other crucial projects, including the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Cycle Network Scheme, the Doughiska Road South Cycle Network, and the BusConnects Galway: Cross-City Link project.
This project represents a pivotal step toward making Galway a more attractive place to live, work, visit, and invest. The modern public transport system aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles, encouraging more residents to walk, cycle, and utilize public transport options.
As Galway moves forward, residents and stakeholders are urged to watch for further updates on the implementation timeline and additional developments related to this transformative project. The planning approval marks a critical turning point for Galway City, with ongoing efforts to enhance sustainable transport options for all.
