Donie Butler, a renowned Kilkenny Railway Historian, will lead the session at Rothe House, unveiling the fascinating journey of the railway line that connected Kilkenny to Maryborough (now Portlaoise). This lecture will explore the construction of the Kilkenny to Maryborough railway line by the Kilkenny Junction Railway Company between 1864 and 1867, a project that significantly impacted local transport and trade.

The lecture will detail how the railway departed from the western end of Kilkenny Railway Station, passing through key locations such as Dunmore, Ballyragget, Attanagh, and Abbeyleix before reaching Connebery Junction, just one mile outside Portlaoise on the Cork to Dublin line. Attendees will gain insight into the historical significance of this route and its role in shaping the region’s development.

In addition, Butler will highlight surviving landmarks from this railway lineage, including the Dinin Bridge river crossing, a testament to the engineering of the time. He will also discuss the branch line constructed to Castlecomer Colliery from Dunmore Junction in 1919, and the eventual closure of the main line on December 31, 1962, with the Comer branch line ceasing operations the following day.

This lecture offers an emotional connection to the past, reminding us of how railways transformed communities and connected people. Admission is priced at €8 for members and €10 for non-members, making it an accessible opportunity for all.
