Synagogue Attack: Killer Calls 999, Pledges ISIS Allegiance

UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, Jihad Al-Shamie called 999 during his brutal attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. This harrowing incident unfolded on the morning of September 28, 2023, as Jewish worshippers gathered to observe the holy day of Yom Kippur.
Authorities report that the 35-year-old attacker drove at innocent bystanders before exiting his vehicle armed with a knife. Tragically, Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, was killed, along with Adrian Daulby, 53, who was believed to have been shot inadvertently by police while attempting to prevent Al-Shamie from entering the synagogue. The rapid response from armed police ultimately led to Al-Shamie’s death.
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts of Counter Terrorism Policing North West confirmed that Al-Shamie made the emergency call “minutes after the first call was made,” claiming responsibility for his actions and expressing allegiance to ISIS. Potts emphasized that the attacker was seen acting suspiciously prior to the assault but had not been reported to police.
This attack raises urgent questions about the motivations behind Al-Shamie’s actions. Counter-terrorism officials believe he was influenced by extremist Islamist ideology, although MI5 has not established any direct connections between him and the terror group. Initial arrests of six individuals linked to the attack have resulted in the release of four without charge, leading investigators to consider Al-Shamie as a potential “lone wolf” perpetrator.
The police investigation remains active, with Potts stating, “This is a live counter-terrorism investigation.” He explained that Al-Shamie had been on bail for an alleged rape but was not known to the Government’s anti-radicalization program, Prevent, or counter-terror police.
As the situation develops, three individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries, including a security guard and a Community Security Trust worker. The emotional impact of this attack has reverberated through the community, emphasizing the urgent need for vigilance and support.
Authorities continue to call for any witnesses to come forward as they piece together the events surrounding this horrific attack. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by extremist ideologies and the importance of community solidarity in the face of violence.
Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation unfolds.
