RTÉ Appoints Gráinne McAleer as New Acquisitions Editor

BREAKING: RTÉ has just announced the appointment of Gráinne McAleer as its new Acquisitions Editor, a strategic move aimed at bolstering global content acquisitions. This decision, confirmed earlier today, comes after an internal competition to find a candidate capable of enhancing RTÉ’s offerings in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
In her role, McAleer will collaborate closely with Dermot Horan, the Director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, to negotiate deals with major Hollywood studios and international distributors. The focus will be on securing thousands of hours of diverse content for RTÉ television and the RTÉ Player, spanning genres such as feature films, drama, comedy series, and documentaries.
McAleer brings over two decades of experience to this position, having previously served as the Commissioning Editor for Documentaries and Features at RTÉ. Her impressive portfolio includes popular series like Operation Transformation, Room to Improve, and The Traitors Ireland, along with acclaimed documentaries such as Quinn Country and The Killing of Father Niall Molloy.
Steve Carson, RTÉ’s Director of Video, praised McAleer’s appointment, stating, “She is an exceptionally experienced commissioner with deep knowledge of global content trends and a keen understanding of Irish audiences.” Horan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of McAleer’s role in an on-demand world. “As viewers increasingly shift to on-demand content, acquiring relevant programming becomes crucial. Gráinne will be instrumental in expanding our offerings,” he said.
Commenting on her new position, McAleer expressed her enthusiasm: “I am delighted to join the Acquisitions team. There has never been such a rich vein of international content, and I’m eager to bring as much of that to our viewers as possible, complementing our fantastic home-produced programming.”
McAleer will officially assume her new role in the coming months, marking a significant step for RTÉ as it strives to enhance its programming and connect with audiences globally.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and what it means for the future of RTÉ’s content strategy.
