Donegal Christmas Toy Appeal Returns to Brighten Holidays for Families

The Donegal Christmas Toy Appeal is set to return for its fourth year, continuing its mission to support families in need throughout County Donegal. This community initiative, in partnership with Lifestart Services, encourages public participation by inviting individuals to become Secret Santas. By purchasing gifts for children facing financial hardships, the appeal aims to ensure that every child experiences the joy of the holiday season.
Since its inception, the Donegal Toy Appeal has significantly impacted local families, easing financial strain and fostering a sense of festive spirit. Mary Walker Callaghan, Regional Manager at Lifestart Services, highlighted the initiative’s importance in her community. “This is the 4th year of our Christmas toy appeal, giving hundreds of children all over the county the opportunity to experience the magic and wonder of Christmas,” she stated. Walker Callaghan emphasized the vital role of community support, stating, “We appreciate the community support towards our mission to make sure no child gets left behind or forgotten this Christmas.”
Community Engagement and Volunteer Efforts
The appeal was established in 2022 by Louise McCormack, who collaborated with Lifestart Services to address the needs of families in distress. “We often don’t realise what our neighbours are going through and the pressure that families are under just to pay the bills,” she noted. The initiative now boasts hundreds of volunteers, many of whom have made participating as a Secret Santa an annual family tradition.
When volunteers are matched with children, they receive information regarding the child’s age and gender, as well as an understanding that the family is experiencing poverty. This awareness is crucial as it adds a personal touch to the giving process. “Every toy donated brings joy to a child who might otherwise go without, and that’s what the Donegal Toy Appeal is all about: community, compassion, and a little Christmas spirit,” McCormack explained.
The Donegal Toy Appeal 2025 is now open for sign-ups, and anyone interested in contributing can register as a Secret Santa by completing the online form available on the appeal’s website. For further inquiries, individuals can contact Mary Walker Callaghan at her email: [email protected].
As the holiday season approaches, the Donegal Christmas Toy Appeal symbolizes the power of community and the collective effort to ensure that every child can enjoy the festive season, no matter their circumstances.
