A catastrophic explosion at the Accurate Energetic Systems munitions plant in Tennessee has resulted in 19 people reported missing and feared dead, according to local authorities. The explosion occurred at the facility, which is located in Humphreys County, around 96 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Nashville. Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene as one of the most devastating he has ever encountered, emphasizing the scale of destruction.

Witnesses reported hearing and feeling the blast from several miles away. Sheriff Davis referred to the missing individuals as “souls,” as officials were still in the process of notifying family members. He stated, “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone,” highlighting the utter devastation of the building.

The explosion obliterated one of the plant’s hilltop structures, leaving behind only smouldering wreckage and burnt-out vehicles. Aerial footage from WTVF-TV clearly illustrated the extent of the damage. Emergency services initially faced challenges entering the site due to ongoing detonations. Grey Collier, a spokesperson for the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency, confirmed that there is no further danger of explosions and that the situation was under control by Friday afternoon.

Investigators are working diligently to determine the cause of the explosion, although Sheriff Davis indicated that this could take several days. The facility, which manufactures and tests explosives across an eight-building campus in the Bucksnort area, is a key supplier to the military. As of now, the company has not provided any comments regarding the incident.

Brad Rachford, the mayor of McEwen, expressed his sorrow, stating, “This is a tragedy for our community.” Residents in the nearby town of Lobelville recounted feeling their homes shake from the force of the explosion. One resident, Gentry Stover, described how he was startled from sleep, believing his house had collapsed.

State representative Jody Barrett, a Republican from Dickson, raised concerns about the potential economic ramifications, given that the plant is a significant employer in the region. He noted that from his home, approximately 15 miles away, he also heard the explosion, likening the sound to something crashing through his roof.
