UK’s ESRC Festival of Social Science Kicks Off with Free Events

UPDATE: The ESRC Festival of Social Science is set to launch on October 18, 2025, bringing a wave of free events across the UK. This annual celebration, now in its 23rd year, aims to highlight the crucial role of social science in understanding our rapidly changing world.
From October 18 to November 8, the festival will feature hundreds of engaging activities designed for both children and adults. Over 41 universities and research institutes are collaborating to present a diverse array of events, showcasing the breadth of social science research that impacts our daily lives.
In Northern Ireland, Queen’s University and Ulster University have partnered to curate a compelling program consisting of 18 talks, workshops, and exhibitions. These events will delve into pressing topics, including the evolution of work in the face of technological advancements, health and wellbeing, environmental issues, crime and justice, and social equality.
Stian Westlake, Executive Chair of the ESRC, emphasized the festival’s significance, stating,
“The ESRC Festival of Social Science showcases how the research we fund helps bring about positive change across society, the economy, and individual lives.”
He encourages everyone to explore the vital work of the UK’s world-class social scientists.
As workplaces continue to transform dramatically, one thing remains clear: people desire access to safe, healthy jobs that ensure a good standard of living. Join in the discussions on what the future of work could look like and how we can shape it collectively.
