A family from Limerick is organizing a Disco Party Bingo night to support the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation, a cause that holds deep personal significance for them. Sandra Cronin, who resides in Bulgaden with her young family, is hosting the event on October 18, 2023, at Bulgaden Castle. The doors will open at 20:00, and the gathering aims to raise funds in memory of her father, Seán O’Shea, who succumbed to cancer in 2018, and her mother, Claire O’Shea, who passed away earlier this year.

The fundraiser comes at a challenging time for Mrs. Cronin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. Unfortunately, her condition has progressed to metastatic cancer, affecting her bones. As a devoted mother to three boys, she emphasizes the importance of positivity and gratitude. “They helped us to help the kids understand what my diagnosis means,” she stated. Mrs. Cronin added that she strives to maintain a cheerful demeanor, believing that there is no benefit in seeking sympathy. “I want to spend my time enjoying myself and enjoying my time with family.”

After dedicating 26 years to the University Hospital Limerick, Mrs. Cronin retired early, initially hoping for a longer career. She noted that both her parents faced health challenges after retiring, leading her to reassess her priorities. “I had always planned on retiring after 40 years’ service, but I now want to make the most of my time,” she expressed in an interview with the Limerick Leader.

As the Disco Bingo event approaches, Mrs. Cronin encourages attendees to wear pink, aiming to transform Bulgaden Castle into a “sea of pink.” For those unable to attend, there is an opportunity to contribute online via her GoFundMe page, where she is close to reaching her fundraising goal of €5,000. This campaign will remain active throughout October, highlighting the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event not only serves as a means of support for the cancer foundation but also as a celebration of life and community. By sharing her story and rallying support, Mrs. Cronin hopes to inspire others facing similar battles.
