Urgent Free Workshop on Supporting Children’s Sensory Needs

UPDATE: A crucial online workshop titled Supporting Your Child’s Sensory Needs is set to take place on October 15, 2023, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM, aimed at empowering parents in Limerick with the tools they need to assist children facing sensory challenges.

The Primary Care Child and Family Psychology Service will host this free workshop, addressing urgent concerns for families navigating sensory processing difficulties. The event is particularly important for parents of children with developmental conditions like Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which can result in varying responses to sensory experiences.

Parents often struggle to understand their children’s behavior, which can signal sensory issues. For instance, children may express discomfort through meltdowns or avoidance, indicating they are overwhelmed. By recognizing these behaviors, parents can better support their children and create more accommodating environments.

The workshop will introduce the STAR method—a strategy for analyzing children’s responses by examining the Setting, Trigger, Action, and Response. This approach can help parents identify when their child is feeling overwhelmed and how to effectively respond, such as by shopping during quieter hours or providing sensory tools.
