Tesco Joins Lidl and Aldi in Reducing Milk Prices in Ireland

Tesco Ireland has announced an immediate reduction in the prices of its own-label milk, following similar moves by Lidl and Aldi. This change, effective immediately, will see the price of a two-litre carton of full-fat and low-fat milk decrease from €2.45 to €2.35. The price for a one-litre carton will also drop from €1.25 to €1.19.
Competitive Pricing Amid Cost Pressures
In addition to the two-litre cartons, Tesco will adjust prices for its three-litre milk from €3.55 to €3.39, and for 1.75-litre cartons from €2.17 to €2.09. One-litre cartons of lactose-free milk and fresh protein milk will see a minor decrease from €1.59 to €1.55.
Geoff Byrne, Tesco’s CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing value for customers, stating, “At Tesco, we’re focused on delivering real value on our customers’ entire shop through the powerful combination of Clubcard Prices and Aldi Price Match.” He added that despite ongoing cost pressures across the supply chain, Tesco remains dedicated to keeping prices affordable while supporting Irish suppliers.
The recent price drops come as a welcome relief for shoppers, who have faced rising costs in various sectors. On the previous Friday, Lidl announced its price reduction, lowering the cost of its two-litre milk from €2.45 to €2.35. The following day, Aldi confirmed it would also lower prices across its milk range.
Inflationary Pressures Impacting Consumers
The reductions in milk prices contrast sharply with the broader trend of rising consumer prices. According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), consumer prices increased by 2.7% in the past year, surpassing the 2% increase recorded in the previous twelve months. This marks the highest annual inflation rate observed since March 2024, when the rate was reported at 2.9%.
Food prices have been particularly affected, with the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages rising by 4.7% over the last year. The increase in food costs significantly contributes to the overall rise in living expenses, with some items, such as a kilogram of steak, seeing price hikes of up to €5.
Shoppers will undoubtedly appreciate the recent price adjustments made by Tesco, Lidl, and Aldi as they navigate these challenging economic conditions. The actions taken by these retailers reflect a growing effort to provide value amidst a climate of rising inflation and consumer concern.
