UPDATE: The inaugural Harvest of Hope Wellbeing Festival took place on October 12, 2025, at the Clanree Hotel in Letterkenny, delivering a powerful message of community and mental health awareness to Donegal farmers and their families. This free, family-friendly event, organized by Donegal Local Development (DLDC) as part of the Connecting for Life Donegal initiative, attracted a vibrant crowd eager to engage in vital conversations surrounding mental wellbeing.

Timed to coincide with World Mental Health Week and the Green Ribbon Campaign, the festival served as a groundbreaking platform for addressing mental health challenges faced by rural communities. Attendees enjoyed live music from Jason McCahill and The Ryan Turner Band, as well as a thrilling jiving competition featuring All-Ireland Champion Alanna O’Leary. The event was marked by laughter, joy, and a palpable sense of connection among farm families.

The festival included a Tractor Showcase that captivated the audience, with local celebrity Donkey 262 judging and awarding prizes sponsored by Cowan Tractors. Families flocked to the petting farm, where a tiny working donkey became the highlight, drawing kids for memorable photos. Free health checks, including blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, were also immensely popular, underscoring the importance of physical health alongside mental wellness.

More than just entertainment, the festival created a welcoming space for meaningful discussions about mental health. Attendees accessed information stands and participated in advice sessions, fostering open dialogue about available support and resources.

“The Harvest of Hope Festival was a wonderful example of community spirit,”

remarked Frank Hynes of Fresh Pastures.

“By coming together today, our farming families showed how important it is to support each other and talk openly about mental health.”

Paul McDaid, Lifelong Learning Project Officer with DLDC, expressed gratitude for the turnout, stating,

“We were blown away by the turnout. It was fantastic to see families enjoying the day and getting involved in conversations about wellbeing.”

The festival was made possible through the collaborative efforts of multiple organizations, including the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP), SCAN HSE, Mental Health Ireland, Teagasc, IFA, Macra na Feirme, and the Donegal Volunteer Centre.

As the festivities concluded, the impact of the Harvest of Hope Festival was clear: it not only entertained but also empowered attendees to prioritize mental health, fostering a culture of support within the farming community. With a strong turnout and positive feedback, this event sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at promoting wellbeing in rural Ireland.
