Gerrard Declines Rangers Return as Club Pursues New Head Coach

Steven Gerrard has opted not to return as head coach of Rangers following discussions that took place over the weekend. The former Liverpool captain had been favored by fans to replace Russell Martin, who was dismissed after a brief tenure. However, timing and personal circumstances ultimately influenced Gerrard’s decision to withdraw from the talks.
Gerrard’s previous stint at Rangers was notably successful; he led the team to victory in the Scottish Premiership in 2021, breaking Celtic’s run for ten consecutive titles. His affection for the club and its supporters was evident, and he expressed interest in a potential return. Despite this, his current living situation in Bahrain complicates matters, making an immediate move back to Glasgow less feasible.
The discussions held on Thursday and Friday were reportedly constructive. Gerrard even explored the possibility of bringing in notable figures such as Gary McAllister, Jermain Defoe, and Steve Holland as part of his coaching staff. Assurances regarding future funding for player acquisitions were likely discussed, especially given that Rangers invested around £34 million in the previous summer transfer window. Yet, the club’s current challenges, including a disappointing eighth-place standing in the league and an early exit from European competitions, added pressure to the potential role.
Despite the positive nature of the talks, it seems the timing was not right for Gerrard. He has indicated a willingness to consider future conversations with Rangers, should the opportunity arise.
Current Coaching Situation at Rangers
Following Martin’s departure, Matt Gill, the assistant coach, also left Ibrox, leading to uncertainty about the team’s immediate future. As of now, Steven Smith, the under-19 coach, is overseeing first-team training. He is supported by B team coach Brian Gilmour, goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo, and head of performance Rhys Owen, all of whom were appointed under the former management.
Rangers’ next match is scheduled for Saturday against Dundee United at Ibrox. The club is keen to appoint another head coach soon, marking a shift in their management structure. Notably, Martin was the first to hold the title of “head coach” in a permanent capacity, a change from the traditional “manager” designation used previously.
Potential Candidates for the Head Coach Position
Rangers are exploring various options to fill the vacant head coach position. One name reportedly on the club’s radar is Danny Rohl, who previously managed Sheffield Wednesday and has an extensive background as an assistant at high-profile clubs like RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. Rohl had been in discussions with Rangers before Martin’s appointment, further establishing his connection with the club.
Other candidates being considered include former managers such as Graham Potter and Gary O’Neil, although it has been indicated that neither is currently in contention. Another potential candidate is Bo Svensson, the former manager of Union Berlin. Additionally, ex-Rangers defender Kevin Muscat and former Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl have also been linked to the role, though their status remains uncertain.
In the background, Andrew Cavenagh, chairman of Rangers, and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe are actively engaged in discussions with various candidates. They are joined by Gretar Steinsson, technical director of 49ers Enterprises, in these negotiations.
As Rangers work to identify their next head coach, the club remains focused on building a competitive team capable of returning to the top of Scottish football.
