UPDATE: A devastating inquest into the death of 14-year-old Sarah Mescall has revealed she suffered fatal brain damage after inhaling aerosol deodorant just hours after her mother purchased it. The tragic incident occurred in Cloongowna, Kilnamona, Co Clare, leading to urgent discussions about the dangers of inhaling volatile substances.

The inquest, held on September 25, 2023, at the Dublin District Coroner’s Court, disclosed that Sarah passed away from irreversible brain damage five days after she exhibited concerning symptoms at home. The young student from Coláiste Muire in Ennis was reported to have become unwell after inhaling the deodorant, raising alarms over potential links to social media challenges.

Despite initial investigations by Gardaí into possible connections to viral online trends, no references were made during the inquest regarding social media influence in this tragic case.

Sarah’s mother, Deirdre Mescall, recounted the heartbreaking moments leading to her daughter’s collapse. After picking her up from a school bus around 4:45 PM on September 20, 2023, Deirdre noted that Sarah seemed normal before heading to her room. Just an hour later, at 5:45 PM, Deirdre found Sarah swaying and unresponsive, prompting a frantic call for help.

In a moving testimony, Deirdre stated, “I said ‘Sarah, what did you do?’ And she answered: ‘Nothing.'” Tragically, Sarah collapsed further, leading her parents to initiate CPR while awaiting emergency services. She was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick and later transferred to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin for specialized care.

Medical reports confirmed Sarah suffered a hypoxic brain injury due to a lack of oxygen, ultimately resulting in brain stem death. The pathologist, Michael McDermott, emphasized the long-standing association between inhaling volatile substances and sudden, unexpected fatalities.

The coroner, Dr. Cróna Gallagher, recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, acknowledging the unintended consequences of Sarah’s actions. Dr. Gallagher expressed her condolences to the Mescall family, highlighting the emotional turmoil they experienced during Sarah’s illness and their courageous decision to donate her organs to help other children.

As discussions on the dangers of inhaling substances gain traction, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder for parents and teenagers alike about the potential risks associated with seemingly harmless household products.

Authorities continue to urge vigilance and education around the risks of inhalants, as they remain committed to preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Parents are encouraged to engage in open discussions with their children about substance use and safety, highlighting the importance of understanding the risks involved.
