90-Year-Old Graduate Inspires at Open University Ceremony in Belfast

URGENT UPDATE: In a remarkable celebration of education, over 300 students graduated from the Open University in Belfast on October 14, 2023, marking a significant milestone in inclusive higher education. Among the graduates was Maryette McFarland, a groundbreaking 90-year-old who became the oldest OU graduate in Ireland this year, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.
This heartfelt ceremony took place at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall, where family and friends gathered to support the graduates. McFarland’s journey to graduation is both inspiring and emotional. After losing her husband, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of education, despite having never used a computer before. With the help of her daughter-in-law, she learned how to navigate her studies online.
Reflecting on her experience, McFarland stated, “If I can do it, anyone can. I really would encourage anyone thinking about going back to learning, to just do it.” Her words resonate deeply with many who may fear the challenges of returning to education later in life.
Alongside McFarland, Nicolle Farren, aged 30, celebrated her graduation with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing, fulfilling her dream while overcoming numerous obstacles. Farren balanced the trials of single parenthood, health issues, and rigorous studies, even completing her final placement after being hospitalized with pneumonia.
“I will be forever proud for being able to successfully complete my degree while starting my family under difficult circumstances,” Farren remarked. “With the OU, you don’t have to give up your life, your work, or your family time to improve yourself.”
The Open University has changed the landscape of education in Northern Ireland, adapting to meet the needs of diverse learners for over 50 years. The flexibility and supportive environment it offers have empowered individuals like McFarland and Farren to achieve their academic aspirations.
As the graduation ceremony concluded, the sense of achievement and community was palpable, showcasing that education is a lifelong journey. The stories of these graduates are a powerful reminder that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.
