Lufthansa has officially introduced a vintage Junkers Ju 52 aircraft in Frankfurt as part of its preparations for the airline’s 100th anniversary celebrations set for 2026. This historic aircraft, which once represented half of the airline’s fleet in the 1930s, will be a key feature of an exhibition at the Lufthansa Group’s Conference and Visitor Center.

The Junkers Ju 52, affectionately known as ‘Aunt Ju’ and ‘Iron Annie,’ holds significant historical importance for Lufthansa, a founding member of the Star Alliance. The aircraft, which has recently arrived in Frankfurt, has a storied past, having originally entered service with the airline in 1932. It became a pivotal part of Lufthansa’s operations during the interwar period and continued to serve as a sightseeing aircraft until its retirement in 2018.

A Historic Aircraft Returns

The specific model, designated D-AQUI, was restored in the mid-1980s and has since transported over 250,000 passengers on leisure flights. Lufthansa describes the Ju 52 as “valued for its efficiency and reliability.” According to the airline, the aircraft remains a “symbol of pioneering spirit, engineering excellence, and the fascination of flight.”

The Ju 52’s robust design allowed it to land on unpaved runways, enhancing its reputation for reliability and innovation. With almost 5,000 units built in Germany, France, and Spain, the aircraft became a hallmark of both civil and military aviation, particularly during World War II.

After its retirement from passenger service, D-AQUI was restored by the Quax Association at Paderborn Lippstadt Airport (PAD) in North Rhine-Westphalia. In July 2023, the aircraft was celebrated with a farewell ceremony at PAD before its transfer to Frankfurt, where it is now set to take center stage for the centenary exhibition.

Centenary Exhibition Plans

Starting in spring 2026, Lufthansa will display the restored Junkers Ju 52 alongside a Lockheed Super Star at its Conference and Visitor Center located at Frankfurt Airport. The exhibition is designed to honor the airline’s century-long legacy and will feature a glass facade, allowing visitors to view the vintage aircraft from outside.

Additionally, the facility will showcase an open gallery highlighting numerous exhibits from Lufthansa’s corporate history, many of which will be publicly displayed for the first time. The new center will be located adjacent to the Lufthansa Aviation Center and will also be available for external event organizers.

The Lockheed Super Star, which will accompany the Ju 52, arrived in Frankfurt in August 2023, newly painted and ready for the anniversary celebrations. Its restoration is progressing swiftly, with the wings recently attached.

With these efforts, Lufthansa is not only commemorating its rich history but also inviting the public to engage with its legacy as it approaches a major milestone. The centenary exhibition promises to be a captivating showcase of aviation heritage, celebrating both the past and the future of one of the world’s leading airlines.
