From Retail to Rescue: Jane Cassidy’s Inspiring Firefighter Journey

In a bold career shift, Jane Cassidy left her nine-year tenure as a communications manager in retail to pursue her passion for helping others as a firefighter with the Dublin Fire Brigade. After hearing a recruitment advertisement in 2022, Cassidy realized that this was the change she needed. “Working with people has always been second nature,” Cassidy said, reflecting on her decision to join the fire service.
Cassidy’s transition was not without challenges. She underwent a rigorous selection process, which included psychometric testing, interviews, and fitness assessments. Once accepted, she began her training in May 2023, a period she describes as intense yet rewarding. “The crew I trained with really made it. We bonded so well and really supported each other,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in the role.
Daily Life as a Firefighter
Now stationed at Tallaght Fire Station, Cassidy’s work as a firefighter and paramedic is dynamic and unpredictable. “Every day is so different. I go into work and I never know what’s going to happen in Dublin city that day. I love that,” she shared. Her station responds to a range of incidents, from fires to medical emergencies and road traffic collisions.
The firefighters work rotating shifts, which require flexibility and adaptability. Cassidy alternates between nine-hour day shifts starting at 09:00 and 15-hour night shifts. Duties at the station also involve maintaining equipment and ensuring readiness for emergencies. “You also do a drill in the afternoon, which can cover anything,” she noted, highlighting the importance of continual training.
One common misconception about her job is that it primarily involves fighting fires. “A lot of my time is doing medical calls, even while in the fire truck. We ensure the patient is stable until an ambulance arrives,” Cassidy explained. Her role often places her in high-pressure situations, including entering burning buildings, which she finds thrilling. “Fighting fires is one part of the training that everyone enjoys,” she said, recalling her first fire-related call as a recruit, where nerves quickly turned to excitement.
Making a Difference and Supporting Each Other
Despite the challenges, Cassidy finds immense satisfaction in her role. “The look on their face when they see you coming… they are after ringing 999 at the worst moment of their day. Being able to arrive on the scene and use my skills to help people in need gives me great satisfaction,” she stated.
The camaraderie among firefighters is another vital aspect of the job. “You rely on each other and you look out for one another. That’s important,” she explained, acknowledging the emotional toll some incidents can take. To cope with the stresses of the job, Cassidy and her colleagues regularly check in with each other and participate in the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) program, which offers support after traumatic events.
When faced with particularly harrowing situations, Cassidy emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy separation between work and home life. “I do think about cases, but I can’t always carry it home with me,” she noted. “Tragic things do occur, and it reminds me to be grateful for what I have. Every morning is a new day.”
Through her journey from retail to the fire service, Jane Cassidy exemplifies dedication and courage, demonstrating that pursuing one’s passion can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career. As she continues to serve her community, her story inspires others to consider the profound difference they can make in the lives of those around them.
