Kilkenny Bus Service Transitions to Cashless Payments, Users React

Changes to the Kilkenny bus service have sparked mixed reactions from local passengers. Starting today, March 15, 2024, JJ Kavanagh has announced that all its routes will transition to a fully cashless payment system, with the exception of Local Link services. A spokesperson for the company stated, “Local Link services are not affected – you can still pay with cash as usual on all Local Link routes.”
The decision aims to streamline operations and enhance the travel experience for passengers. The company expressed gratitude towards its users, emphasizing the goal of making travel “faster, safer, and simpler” on its main routes. They reassured Local Link passengers that their usual payment methods would remain unchanged, thanking them for their continued support.
Despite the assurances, several local bus users have publicly expressed their disappointment regarding the shift to cashless payments. One user described the move as “absolutely ridiculous,” highlighting that not everyone has access to a bank card or a Leap card, which is commonly used in the region.
Others shared their experiences, noting that cash payments were infrequent among passengers. One individual remarked, “I’ve been using JJ Kavanagh for a good couple of years, and I’ve only ever seen a handful of people paying cash, as they book online anyway to ensure they get a seat.” This sentiment reflects a growing trend in public transportation where digital payments are becoming increasingly prevalent.
Questions have arisen about alternatives for those without cards. “Any alternatives for those without cards?” one concerned user inquired, indicating a need for the company to address the potential challenges faced by a segment of the population.
As the transition unfolds, the impact on local commuters remains to be seen. The shift to cashless payments is part of a broader trend in the transportation sector aimed at improving efficiency and convenience. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that all passengers feel included in this new system.
For updates and further discussions, local residents are encouraged to share their views via social media platforms.
