UPDATE: Heather Humphreys, a candidate for President representing Fine Gael, has made a bold statement advocating for a united Ireland, aiming to persuade unionists of its benefits before the crucial polls on October 24. Raised in the predominantly Protestant village of Drum, County Monaghan, Humphreys is determined to bridge divides and extend an olive branch to unionists.

In a candid interview with Henry McKean for The Hard Shoulder, Humphreys expressed her deep-rooted desire for a united Ireland, identifying herself as a “true Irish republican” in the spirit of Wolfe Tone. She emphasized the historical complexities of the border, stating, “When you go back to when the border was formed, you had unionists going to sleep as British citizens, woke up as Irish.”

Humphreys acknowledges the fears stemming from the Troubles, reflecting on how it impacted families and relationships across the border. “People were afraid to go and visit their relations in Northern Ireland in case they got caught up in a bomb,” she recounted.

Furthermore, she hopes that her background as a Presbyterian Ulsterwoman will alleviate concerns among unionists regarding their identity in a united Ireland. “I want to see a united Ireland in time but there’s a lot of work to be done,” she stated. “I can’t put a time limit on it; of course, I’d love to see it but what I do know is that we do have to really extend the hand of friendship.”

Humphreys’ candidacy represents a significant opportunity for dialogue and understanding between communities, as she urges unionists to see her as an ally: “Look at me, I come from a minority, Protestant tradition and this country has given me a wonderful chance. It has made me what I am.”

As polling day approaches, the impact of Humphreys’ message may influence voter sentiment. With over one million unionists residing in Northern Ireland, her initiative aims to foster unity and respect for diverse identities within a potential united Ireland.
