Donegal County Council is evaluating the implementation of ‘sunflower’ parking spots in Donegal Town to assist individuals with hidden disabilities. Local Councillor Jimmy Brogan has collaborated with Donegal Town Mayor Anna Gallagher on this initiative, which aims to provide designated parking for those who may not have visible disabilities but still face challenges.

Sunflower parking spaces will be marked with a sunflower symbol or similar icon, reserving them for individuals with conditions such as Autism, learning difficulties, mental health disorders, and various physical impairments. These hidden disabilities can encompass a range of chronic health issues, including asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and other serious conditions that affect daily life.

In a statement, Councillor Brogan noted, “Anna and several disability groups have surveyed parents, carers, and individuals with hidden disabilities. They identified potential locations for these sunflower parking spaces.”

The council is considering several sites for these designated spots, including the car park behind the Bank of Ireland, the facility behind Elverys, and additional parking areas throughout Donegal Town. These spaces are designed for individuals who require parking in quieter or more secure locations but do not hold disabled parking permits.

Donegal County Council has engaged with its roads section, which has committed to further exploring this proposal. The aim is to establish a number of sunflower parking spaces in the coming weeks. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve accessibility and inclusivity for all members of the community, particularly those who may struggle with mobility or other challenges not immediately visible to the public.

As the council moves forward, stakeholders hope this initiative will enhance the quality of life for many residents and visitors in Donegal Town, ensuring that those with hidden disabilities have access to essential parking facilities.
