Danny Rohl Focuses on Wins as Rangers’ New Head Coach
Danny Rohl has officially taken the helm as Rangers’ new head coach, succeeding Russell Martin on a two-and-a-half year contract. His first match in charge will be against Brann in the UEFA Europa League on October 5, 2023. Rohl’s appointment follows a period of extensive deliberations by the club, during which several candidates were considered, including former Rangers player Steven Gerrard and Australian coach Kevin Muscat.
In a media briefing on Tuesday, Rohl emphasized that his priority lies not in whether he was the first choice for the position, but rather in achieving immediate results on the pitch. “You can be the first, the second or the third choice. The important thing is that you win the next games,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to building a winning culture at Ibrox.
Immediate Focus on Winning Matches
Rohl inherits a team that has struggled significantly this season, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League with only one win from their opening eight matches. The team’s lack of performance under Martin, who led them to their worst league start, has left fans frustrated. Rohl acknowledged the need for urgent improvements, stating, “The first step is, and this is the huge one, we need wins in a row.” He believes that consecutive victories will foster self-confidence among players.
During training, Rohl observed a spirited and intense atmosphere, which he believes is essential for the team’s development. “I see so much potential,” he remarked, outlining his vision for a team characterized by intensity, teamwork, and an attacking style of play. While he aspires to implement an attractive brand of football, he insists that the priority must be securing points first.
Addressing Mindset and Recruitment Concerns
The new coach is also aware of the challenges posed by recent recruitment strategies at the club. Many players brought in during the summer have faced scrutiny, and Rohl stressed the importance of aligning recruitment with the team’s needs moving forward. “It’s important that you bring the strength of the squad on the pitch,” he said, indicating his intention to maximize the potential of the current roster.
Rohl believes that a shift in mindset is crucial for the team to succeed. “We need to speed up our game,” he explained, noting that while the team finds itself in promising positions, they often fail to capitalize effectively. “We want to attack the last line and create more chances,” he added, emphasizing that improvement begins with better positioning and collective effort.
As the club prepares for upcoming fixtures, Rohl’s focus remains firmly on instilling a winning mentality. He recognizes the high expectations surrounding Rangers but insists that success cannot be achieved through attractive football alone. “We have to press well, we have to hunt, we have to go on the counter pressing,” he said, outlining his tactical approach.
With the weight of expectations on his shoulders, Rohl is committed to transforming Rangers’ fortunes and rekindling the connection with their supporters through consistent performances and results on the pitch.
